Wish to have children

… and what we do exactly to make your wish come true:

How long a couple’s desire to have children turns out to be ‘unfulfilled’ varies from case to case - and also depends on the age of the prospective parents and their individual temperament.

In most cases, after six to twelve months of unsuccessful ‘effort’ , a detailed clarification of the wish to have children is conducted.

To begin with, the following steps are undergone:

  • a thorough gynaecological examination including ultrasound
  • a sample of the vaginal culture for detection of bacteria including a possibly undetected Chlamydia infection
  • a blood test to determine the hormonal situation (from the 1st to the 4th day of the cycle)
  • a test for fallopian tube patency or possibly a laparoscopy
  • a spermiogram which will be repeated after 4 to 6 weeks

Simultaneously, so-called cycle monitoring should take place, meaning the time of ovulation will be determined.

Further steps are carried out according to the result of the collected findings.

It is also important to know that in some cases this standard procedure is deviated from.

Diagnostic and therapeutic steps in connection with the unfulfilled wish to have children are not, or only in exceptional cases, covered by health insurance companies.

Competent help with the wish to have children

More and more women come into the practice of their gynaecologist with the wish to have children, but it just won’t work the natural way. This is where I offer quick and competent help.

Women often hear phrases like ‘You’ll get there’ or ‘You’ve only been trying for six months’, which are not very helpful. Instead, women with an unfulfilled wish to have children should undergo a swift assessment, so that the most appropriate therapy can be found or they can be referred to a fertility centre.

The reasons for the often unfulfilled wish to have a baby are, above all, due to today’s longer education-period of women, their success and greater commitment to their professions. The desire for children and a family is secondary, especially amongst well-educated women and young academics. The fertile years of women overlap with their education-period and aspiring career. Therefore, the wish for children only arises in their late 30s.

The average Austrian first-time mother is over 30 while the most fertile years in a woman’s life are at 25-30 years of age. The diminishing fertility in the fourth decade of life, professional or leisure stress and the often decreasing sperm quality in men lead to an unfulfilled desire for children.
